December 1, 2008

Krishnammal Jagannathan, 82, who has been fighting for the rights of the so-called untouchables in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu for more than 50 years, has won a $100,000 prize for her work. She is one of two winners awarded the Opus Prize this year by Seattle University. Her latest project is building waterproof housing for dalits who lost their homes in the 2004 tsunami. At a speech she gave at the University of San Francisco last week, the octogenarian said she has no plans to take a break from her work.
