Sakena Yacoobi Wins WISE Prize for Education

Dr. Sakena Yacoobi, 2013 Opus Prize laureate, was recently named winner of the 2015 WISE Prize for Education. Founder and executive director of the Afghan Institute of Learning (AIL), Yacoobi has spent two decades working to create new education opportunities for women in Afghanistan.

The WISE Prize for Education was presented by Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, Chairperson of Qatar Foundation, at the Opening Plenary session of the seventh World Innovation Summit for Education in Doha, Qatar.

While working in a refugee camp, Yacoobi realized her own accomplishments were tied to education. In one year, she opened 15 schools for 27,000 students. Today, Afghan Institute of Learning is the largest non-governmental organization in the country and runs 52 centers that provide literacy programs, higher education, arts and culture, healthcare and income generating activities for women across Afghanistan.

The WISE Prize for Education was established in 2011 to raise the status of education. The laureate receives an award of $500,000 and a minted gold medal.

Yacoobi dreams of a free, educated Afghanistan where women have learned to think critically and know how to care for their children. She is devoted to transforming the minds and hearts of people through education.
